(D.V.M degree) and of Stanford University (Ph. D. in Microbiology and Immunology). After joining UC Santa Cruz in 2007, he established an active research program in the areas of protein evolution and DNA repair.

The Division of Undergraduate Education and the Colleges will be enriched by Dr.Camps’ experience with course development at all levels and as Graduate Representative for his department. In addition, Dr. Camps brings extensive administrative experience at Crown College. This includes his service in the Executive and Academic Standing Committees for two years, and his recent tenure as co-Provost (2013–14) and as interim Provost of Crown College (2014–15). His achievements to date include:

  • Revamping Crown’s Undergraduate Research Program, a program that facilitates Crown student engagement in mentored research projects

  • Raising the scholarly profile of the Social Fiction Conference,

  • Strengthening academic advising and alumni relations through the creation of positions for student interns in coordination with the Career Center and University Relations.

Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education Richard Hughey notes that he is “delighted that Manel will continue as Crown Provost; his impact on and commitment to the college and its students over the past two years has been high, and his work at Crown and on campus will no doubt lead to many more achievements.”

The incoming College Provost is excited to work with Crown’s community of students, faculty, and staff to provide students with a college educational experience of the highest quality. Manel Camps’ vision for the college includes four elements: (1) building strong transferable skills, with an emphasis on communication and critical analysis; (2) personalized instruction, one-on-one or in small (20-25 student) sections; (3) enhanced advising and orientation for optimal leveraging of campus resources, and (4) reaching out to the wider community on and off of campus through experiential learning and scholarly events. Manel Camps’ vision is inclusive, meeting students where their needs are, and celebrating diversity.

Manel Camps’ leadership style is highly cooperative, working together with partners across campus including the Career Center, Writing Program, International Education Office, Alumni Association, and Residential Education. During the next three years, Manel Camps’ goal is to create platforms to more effectively engage Crown College stakeholders in the education of Crown students. This includes the creation of a newsletter to give a voice to students, faculty and alumni; strengthening Crown’s academic instruction and advising portfolios; and further expanding Crown’s experiential program.

Dr. Camps is “very happy to have this opportunity to continue to show his dedication to UC Santa Cruz, to his Department and to its Colleges, and to work for the success and well being of students, staff, and faculty.”
